With this statistic in mind, it is important to discuss the topic of gun control in the healthcare industry. 

 In recent years, there has been much debate regarding gun control laws in the United States. Some argue that the Second Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms, while others argue that stricter gun control laws are necessary to prevent violent crimes. As healthcare professionals, we must consider the impact of gun violence not only on society, but also on our patients and ourselves. One argument for stricter gun control laws is the potential for individuals with mental illness to obtain firearms. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, "only 3-5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness." 

However, the link between mental illness and gun violence cannot be ignored. In fact, a study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that individuals with mental illness were 3 times more likely to commit violent crimes. In addition to the potential for individuals with mental illness to obtain firearms, there is also the risk of workplace violence in healthcare settings. A study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine found that "about 37% of non-fatal injuries from assaults in the private sector occurred in healthcare and social assistance settings." 

This statistic is alarming and emphasizes the need for increased safety measures in healthcare settings. One possible solution to the issue of gun violence in the healthcare industry is the implementation of workplace violence prevention programs.
